Blue Balloon Books. 08-04-2025. Hardcover. 32 pp. ISBN 9781964934303. $21.99. Ages 6 to 9.
A parallel story of survival relating two disparate Mollys B across the expanse of space and time.
It can be difficult to imagine a bovine with a story similar to that of the true-life character known as the “Unsinkable Molly Brown,” but where there is a will to survive, there is a way, and these two Mollys have equally dynamic stories to share. Recounted in parallel design, this book draws direct links between Margaret “Molly” Brown’s miraculous survival on the doomed Titanic to the life of Number 469, a cow also named Molly, who escaped certain death at a meatpacking plant. Each page is subdivided into two parts: on the left, readers see a clip of Molly Brown’s story and on the right is a related piece of Number 469’s tale.
Though both of these two Mollys diverted from the paths expected of them and survived great struggles, the woman proceeded to thrive while the bovine never found true peace. This obvious disconnect can make the relationship between the two characters’ stories less clear for readers, ultimately leading them to wonder at the reasons behind this book’s design. While the book’s presentation has obviously been carefully considered, the murky rationale behind the parallel stories limits it. But due to the parallel structure of the book’s delivery, curious readers will endeavor to discover the similarities between the experiences of the human and the cow. While the overarching question of why these two stories have been connected is never fully answered, the experiences are nonetheless interesting to consider in tandem.
Straightforward language guides the narrative, clearly demarcating important moments in a way that is age-appropriate and relatable for elementary school-aged readers. Young elementary school-aged readers will best connect with this book because of the relative simplicity of the storytelling and the cartoon-like illustrations that are used to educate young readers.
Playful font that resembles handwriting is used throughout this text, pairing well with detailed, watercolor illustrations. These images give readers a visual understanding of the elements of the story to supplement the narrative. The placement and design of each page are well thought-out, utilizing appropriate font and language for the target audience alongside relevant imagery.
Back matter includes succinct summaries of both characters’ lives, real photographs, a glossary, resources, and an author’s note to enhance the veracity of the story. Additionally, the incorporation of supplemental end matter gives the book a more complete feel.
Unusual in both concept and delivery, this book can inspire conversation about similarities between otherwise disparate historical moments as well as the humane treatment of animals. It can be considered as an addition to classroom library collections for young elementary school-aged readers.
