Every published Open Shelf Review is clearly identified as a paid review. Transparency is not a disclaimer; it is the foundation of the service.

We distinguish between the purchase of a professional review and the editorial conclusions reached within it. Payment does not determine the reviewer’s opinion, the ratings assigned, or whether an author chooses to publish the completed review. Reviews may be positive, neutral, or critical, because credibility depends on editorial independence.

Every review is written by a vetted professional selected for experience relevant to the book’s subject, genre, audience, or reading level.

Reviewers exercise independent editorial judgment. Reviews must always be fair, constructive, and supported by the book itself. Open Shelf Reviews does not sell favorable outcomes.

Books are assigned by our editorial team according to reviewer expertise and availability. Authors and publishers may not select their reviewers.

Reviewers must disclose any personal, professional, or financial relationship that could interfere with an impartial evaluation. When conflict of interest exists, the book is reassigned.

Reviewers and editors are responsible for checking names, quotations, plot details, publication information, and other factual claims before a review is completed.

A review should represent the book accurately, even when the reviewer’s assessment is critical. Misreporting damages the credibility of the reviewer, the publication, and the author whose work is being evaluated.

Reviews should offer a clear and well-supported assessment without exaggeration, personal attacks, or undue bias.

Reviewers evaluate a book according to its intended audience, purpose, genre, and format and not according to whether it reflects the reviewer’s personal tastes.

Reviewers will not manipulate, sensationalize, or distort a book’s content to create a stronger reaction.

Sensitive subjects will be addressed accurately and proportionately.

Every review includes an independent editorial assessment, Reader & Market Readiness Ratings, and specific feedback from an experienced professional.

Constructive does not mean uniformly positive. It means that praise and criticism should be clear, relevant, and useful. Reviews should help authors and publishers understand a book’s strengths, limitations, likely audience, and market position.

Open Shelf Reviews are human-written and reflect the independent judgment of qualified professional reviewers.

AI tools may not be used to generate, rewrite, or replace a reviewer’s evaluation. Any permitted administrative or editorial use of technology must preserve confidentiality, accuracy, originality, and human accountability. Reviewers remain fully responsible for every word submitted under their names.

Completed reviews are subject to editorial review for clarity, accuracy, fairness, consistency, and adherence to Open Shelf Reviews standards.

Editorial oversight may improve structure, grammar, or clarity, but it does not convert an independent assessment into a favorable one. The reviewer’s judgment remains their own.

We take responsibility for our work. Authors and publishers may report factual errors in a completed review, and confirmed errors will be corrected promptly. Differences of opinion are not factual errors. Reviews are not revised simply because an author or publisher disagrees with the assessment, ratings, or critical conclusions.

When a correction materially changes a published review, Open Shelf Reviews may identify that a correction has been made.

After receiving a completed evaluation, the author or publisher has 14 days to decide whether to publish the review on Open Shelf Reviews or keep it private.

Choosing to keep a review private does not alter the review itself. Published reviews become part of Open Shelf Review’s searchable resource for librarians, educators, booksellers, and readers, and remain clearly labeled as paid reviews.

Professional reviewing requires honesty, judgment, and accountability. Our reviewers are expected to write in their own voices, support their conclusions, acknowledge complexity, and treat every book and author with professional respect.

Great books can come from anywhere. Our responsibility is not to promise that every book will be praised. It is to ensure that every submitted book is evaluated carefully, independently, and on its own merits.
